TAS

SEVEN STRIPS

Purpose:  Designed to develop note taking, summarising, recall, paired or group work.

Students asked to read an article and decide on the 7 most important facts.  These facts are compared between students.  Similar facts are grouped together.

Students discuss the facts and gouping, before writing a summary based on the 7 strips.

Implementation:

1.  Read text as many times as necessary for understanding.

Teach students that main ideas are shown in title, sub heading, topic sentences, first and last paragraph.

2.  Individually decide on the 7 most important points.

3.  Close text.

4.  Write each point on strip of paper (one strip per point)

5.  In pairs or groups of four: (For high support students - as a class)

    (a)  pool all the strips

    (b)  group similar points

    (c)  delete duplicated points

6.  Move points around into an order whcih they can be presented.

7.  As a class / group / individual write a summary of the article based on the points made.

At this point the teacher may model the writing process - thinking aloud as a first draft summary is produced.
